Roundtable Discussion

Voice from the Courier

In order to get more clarity on the issue, our team spoke with Victoria Amstrong, the Editor in Chief of Newcastle University’s student newspaper- The Courier.

Armstrong had run for the position of ‘NUS Delegate’ in order to represent our university at the NUS but through her campaign, she realised the gaping holes within the NUS’ systematic functioning, system of voting and overall effectiveness in the University. She became one of the main propagators of the ‘leave’ campaign, as she believed the University was fundamentally better off being dis-affiliated from a union which they aren’t getting an appropriate contribution from.

We also invited three students into a roundtable discussion.

One of the main points of discussion is whether the NUS represents students well enough, while another issue highlighted by those opposed to the NUS is the rejection of the one member one vote motion.
